What’s your plan for the next bear market? This is an important question to ask yourself and your advisor.
It’s not to say that the markets are going down from here, or that we are going into a bear market. But the reality is that bear markets happen every few years, and you need to have a plan. We are facing a lot of headwinds right now with everything that is going on in the world. And we want you to be ready for anything. So, what’s your plan for the next bear market? Markets took another hit this week, with U.S. equities leading the move lower again. The S&P 500 dropped -2.5%, while the Dow slid -3.2%, the S&P 500 did breach correction territory at the close on Thursday. Canada held up a little better, with the TSX down just -0.9%, while Japan and Europe slipped -0.3% and -0.9%, respectively. There was a bit of a relief rally today, but not enough to keep the major indexes out of the red for the week.
The escalating trade war rhetoric continues to be a major driver, now turning into actual policy. With steel and aluminum tariffs in full effect and retaliation flying back and forth, markets are finally waking up to the fact this isn’t just tough talk. It’s weighing on growth expectations, both in the U.S. and here in Canada. The Fed is widely expected to hold steady on rates next week, but markets are starting to price in cuts by mid-year. Meanwhile, the Bank of Canada already delivered its seventh straight cut, bringing rates down to 2.75%, with the possibility of even more easing if things don’t calm down. There is lots on the table for next week.
