Markets ran positively this week, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both gaining 2.0% in CAD terms. The TSX rose 1.0%, led by strength in Real Estate and Consumer Staples, while U.S. sectors saw a broad lift with Real Estate and Tech at the front. Most major global indices finished higher as well, with the MSCI World up 2.1%. Meanwhile, Emerging Markets lagged behind, but they were still positive overall.
Even though it was a short week in the U.S, the week wasn’t short on noise, with President Trump back in the headlines. Elon Musk stepped down from his government advisory role, and a federal court partially struck down Trump’s use of emergency tariff powers, although an appeal quickly paused the decision. Markets largely ignored the drama and carried on, treating it as background noise rather than market-moving news.
Meanwhile, under the surface, sentiment has been improving. U.S. consumer confidence rebounded sharply, and economic growth continues to show signs of resilience. Even in Canada, Q1 GDP topped expectations, and inflation pressures have cooled, at least for now.
