The U.S Dollar
Will Simpson and Greg Wise
August 18, 2025
The dollar is moving. What does it mean for Canadian investors and your portfolio?
Greg and I talk about the U.S. dollar’s recent weakness, what’s driving it, and how it affects markets and investors.
Another strong week for equities, with most major indices finishing higher despite some signs that inflation may be creeping back in. The TSX gained 0.3% while U.S. markets were also strong, led by the Dow and Russell 2000. Japan stood out internationally with a 4.5% gain.
Two key economic releases kept markets on their toes, July’s U.S. CPI was mixed, but the hotter PPI print later in the week raised concerns that tariffs are beginning to flow through producer prices. This mixed inflation picture saw rate cut bets pared slightly but still firmly priced in. Meanwhile, Canada’s Summary of Deliberations showed a split BoC Council, with some members hinting the current stance is restrictive enough; attention now turns to next week’s CPI in Canada.
