Innovation, Hype, and Investment Discipline.
Markets started the week on a choppier note, as geopolitical concerns and mixed economic signals weighed on sentiment. By the end of the week, however, risk appetite had improved, helped by renewed peace headlines, lower oil prices, and continued excitement around one of the most anticipated IPOs in recent memory.
The late-week rebound helped markets finish broadly higher. Emerging markets led with a gain of +5.6%, while small caps also performed well, with the Russell 2000 up +4.4%. International markets were strong, with Europe and Japan both gaining +2.7%. North American markets also finished positive, though the gains were more measured, with the TSX up +1.6%, the Nasdaq up +1.0%, and the S&P 500 up +0.9%.
The biggest story Friday was SpaceX. After pricing its IPO at $135 per share, the stock closed at $160.95, up roughly 19% on its first day of trading. That strong debut added even more attention to an already high-profile listing and raised the broader question of how investors should think about innovation, valuation, and discipline in a market that is once again rewarding risk.
