Making sense of AI’s opportunities, risks and what they mean for you.
Markets continue to show resilience, even as the challenges build. This week, the S&P 500 gained 2.2%, the Nasdaq rose 3.1%, and the TSX was essentially flat despite weakness in energy stocks. Technology led the way, with the Canadian sector gaining more than 9% and its U.S. counterpart rising 4%. Investors are still finding reasons to be optimistic.
The main pressure is coming from higher borrowing costs. The yield on U.S. government bonds maturing in 10 years touched 5.20%, its highest level since 2007. Alongside oil around $100, that creates challenges for businesses and consumers and can weigh on stock prices. But there are also positives: manufacturing has improved, business investment remains healthy, and corporate earnings and economic growth have been supportive. Higher yields are easier for stocks to absorb when the economy and corporate profits are growing. They become more concerning when inflation keeps borrowing costs high while growth slows.
The question now is how long that balance can last. Markets have absorbed the rise in yields so far, but further increases or a prolonged period of high borrowing costs could become harder to manage. Elevated energy prices and persistent inflation also deserve attention. The strength in markets is encouraging, but higher rates leave less room for disappointment.
That same balance between opportunity and risk is the focus of this week’s video, where we explore what AI could mean for investors and how it shapes our strategy.
